2011 Holliday Movies

Surprisingly, I was able to start my holiday movie season with a highly anticipated Chinese film. “Fei Cheng Wu Rao 2” aka “If you’re the one 2” was showing in some theaters here in the SF Bay area. It was a solid romantic comedy, about an older man’s continued quest to win a young woman’s heart. Unfortunately my American friends, I can’t recommend this to you as many of the jokes are lost in translation.

Which leads to my next Chinese film, Let the bullet fly. This film is directed by my favorite Chinese director at the moment, Jiang Wen, who directed the opening story of New York I Love You. Let the bullet fly, again, was mainly a satire on current cultual and political conditions of China, and requires a deep understanding of the language, I like where this movie was going, but, ultimately, It got too cryptic even for me.

The Tourist, it has it’s good moments, in fact, a lot of it. Its flaw was that the story concentrated too much on the two main characters through out, and I smelled the ending 30 minutes in.

True Grit, now that’s a movie I liked, brilliant casting, plus “enhanced” dialogue that kept some of the best lines from the 1969 original, and Hailee Steinfeld has made this film very entertaining.

The Green Hornet, I always try my best to support Asian actors, I’m glad this one turned out to be a fun movie that at least TRIED to evoke some romantic involvement of an Asian man, albeit it was about 3 – 5 minutes out of the movie. I also wanted to watch what was Michel Gondry’s take on an action film. This time, was a bit disappointing. The movie dragged and dragged, especially towards the end, and I was also surprised it had a lot of cliche moments. Seth Rogen was a big reason why I can’t say this movie sucked.
